ABSTRACT

The negative environmental impacts of petroleum-based products have resulted into research on how to find renewable sources. In this study, Neem oil (Azardirachta Indica A. Juss) was used to produce bio-based transformer oil. The crude neem-oil was extracted from neem-seeds and refined. The refining employed include: degumming to remove phospholipids (fats) from the oil. Spinning of the oil and trans esterification with methanolic KOH on heating resulted in a homogenous mixture. N- hexane was used to extract the ester from the mixture and then allow to dry. This work was limited to the addition of pour point depressant using PVA, and anti-foaming agent (silicon oil) and observing their effect on dielectric strength of the transformer. It was observed that an increase in dielectric strength. Also, the flow property of the oil was improved with the addition of the anti-foaming agent.
