Abstract
Plastic waste has become one of the most serious environmental challenges faced globally,
and is due to the extensive use of plastics in domestic, industrial, and commercial
applications. This study seeks to address the increasing problem of plastic waste
accumulation in households and small communities. Hence. the machine was designed as a
low-cost, energy-efficient, and locally manufacturable solution capable of processing
common household plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high-density
polyethylene (HDPE). Performance evaluation of the fabricated machine showed that the
shredder operated at a cutter shaft speed of approximately 65 rpm with a throughput
capacity of 18 kg/h. The machine achieved an operational efficiency of 91% and produced
plastic flakes averaging 8 mm in size, suitable for recycling and further processing.
Functional testing confirmed smooth operation, low vibration, structural stability, and
effective shredding of household plastic waste. The project demonstrates that an effective
plastic waste shredder can be produced using simple manufacturing processes and locally
sourced materials. The machine provides a practical solution for decentralized plastic waste
management and supports sustainable recycling practices.
